About Lightning Box
Lightning Box Games has been around since 2004, and it is a comparatively small studio that currently collaborates with Light & Wonder. The team behind Lightning Box Games has over 20 years of collective experience in the slot design, math, and gambling niche. The studio has also designed some high-quality slots for such providers as IGT and Aristocrat.
At the time of organizing this Q&A, Lightning Box had 40+ games in their library, and the variety of those games can impress even the most pampered gambler; the studio makes all types of real money slots, from jackpots to social gaming products, from products for online casino sites to games for land-based facilities. It works with many reliable casino sites and offers omnichannel games that work with all OS. Bright games by this studio is something any player will notice for sure.
Numerous online casinos can add games by Lightning Box to their lobbies because this studio has licenses for operating across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The studio also cooperates with other providers such as Quickfire, High 5 Games, etc. Obviously, such flexibility and variety have caught CasinosHunter’s attention, and luckily, Michael Maokhamphiou, Operations Manager at Lightning Box, agreed to take part in the Q&A!
Q/A Session With Michael Maokhamphiou, Operations Manager
Michael is the Operations Manager at Lightning Box and assists with the day-to-day operations of the business. He handles Studio game development projects & deliverables, client support & liaison, and partner management.
Michael's favorite slot by Lightning Box Games: Lightning Shenlong.
Hello! Thank you so much for participating in our Q&A! First things first, can you please introduce yourself more to our readers, and tell about your career, experience, and what you do for the company?
You’re very welcome! I’m Michael Maokhamphiou and I’m the Operations Manager at Lightning Box. I have over 15 years’ industry experience after beginning my career as a QA engineer at Konami. I then moved into iGaming as a Senior Program Manager at NextGen Gaming, before joining the senior management team at Lightning Box in 2019. I’m responsible for the product roll-out and making sure our games meet all market requirements
If you would compare Lightning Box Games to other online casino software providers of slots in the niche, what strengths would you underline that make the company stand out among the competition?
I think we deliver a very consistent product with very strong maths models in particular.
We have a staggering amount of experience in game creation at Lightning Box, with our founders in particular having built up great knowledge across land-based, social and online slots.
I’d like to think our slots are for hardcore fans who really know a good game when they play it.
How many games are already in the library of Lightning Box Games? How many games are released per month / per year?
I’m pleased to say that we now have over 40 titles, with a wide variety of styles and maths models suitable for any market. We always look to release ten or 11 new titles a year, which works out as roughly one per month. That ensures fans have a steady and consistent stream of new games to look forward to each year.
What are the signature features or tech specs of your games?
We’re probably best known for our Reelfecta and Waysfecta mechanic. Waysfecta made its debut in our game Enchanted Waysfecta last July, which set in a magical forest and inspired by the Nutcracker Suite ballet. It delivers up to 15,552 ways to win and is very popular with players as a result!
Can you name three the most popular games by Lightning Box Games so far? Are there any games that have already become classic?
Our three best known and best performing games are Chicken Fox, Silver Lion and Lightning Horseman. I think fans of our games would describe them as classics and they have certainly earned a deserved placed in the pantheon of online slots.
The mark of a great game is longevity. Many burn brightly and fade quickly. These three were instantly popular but are still played regularly by players around the world.
How much time is needed to make one new game, from idea to release? How many people are needed for this?
Believe it or not, it can quite often be over a year from inception to release. Of course, the timeline is dependent on complexity. Since we’re a small studio it is very much a collaborative effort by our whole team, who help in all aspects of game development in one way or another. We also outsource software development to contractors to give us more capacity. Studios can’t afford for themes or topics to be a flash in the pan as things can date quickly over the course of 12 months, so when we come up with the idea we need to know it will still be a good one in a year’s time.
Can you share the information what is the biggest possible win in your games? Has anyone already hit that maximum win, and if yes, what game was it?
Our biggest win is $250k…and the good news is it’s still waiting to be claimed!
The chances of hitting a maximum win like that on any game are always very low, of course, but it really doesn’t mean it’s not achievable. It’s just dependent on a player’s luck on any spin. We routinely see players win big in most of our hit games and there’s no reason why the big one won’t drop soon!
Are there any interesting collaborations or releases we should know about?
We have Raven’s Reveal coming out later this month, which we’re excited about. It’s has a spooky feel to it in an old graveyard and will be a favourite of fans of old school horror movies. As some players will know, we’re now part of Light & Wonder.
We are hard at work on some collaborations with the land-based team there and hope to have some interesting news soon. Watch this space, as they say!
Can you please tell us more about Lightning Box Games’ plans for the future?
I think you’re going to see a lot more of us. We obviously have games in the pipeline, but the collaboration with Light & Wonder will undoubtedly lift our profile and showcase us in front of bigger and bigger audiences. We are particularly excited about the opportunities in the U.S and Canada. We recently gained a licence in our fifth U.S. State (Connecticut) and we have a large pe-existing fan-base there thanks to the success of the land-based versions of our games.
