What is the Legal Gambling Age in ME
Sports Betting
Sports betting is already legal on paper but the law is not active yet. The earliest expected possibility for sports betting to become completely legal – both offline and online – is 2024. But technically, anyone who is 21 can make bets on sports already today and they will not be persecuted (which may not be the case for operators though).
Casinos
There are two land-based casinos in Maine that are officially regulated by the State of Maine Gambling Control Board. The minimum Maine gambling age for entering is 21 years old.
Online casinos are illegal regardless of the player’s age.
Poker
The number and choice of live poker rooms is very limited in the state because there are only two land-based casino facilities available. The minimum legal gambling age in Maine for players is 21.
As for the online form of poker, the state’s legislation does not address poker games on the Internet directly, so there is no clear rule about them being legal or not. Therefore, operators that try to offer online poker to locals may have trouble with the law but players are unlikely to be prosecuted if they happen to gamble on a platform online for real money.
What has to be kept in mind about unregulated online platforms of course is that they can be shut down and blocked by the local government at any moment and no one guarantees the players to return their deposits, let alone pay the winnings.
Fantasy Sports
Daily Fantasy Sports were legalized and regulated in Maine officially in 2017. The minimum age to be allowed as a participant and bettor is 18.
Lottery
Anyone in the state who is 18 years old and older can buy lottery tickets and win cash prizes. Online lottery is still in question.
Bingo
Bingo, as well as raffles and card games, are available to players 16/18 years old and older if organized by charitable organizations for fundraising purposes. In Bingo, prizes can be not more than $400, in raffles, prize value can be up to $75,000, and in card games, the maximum possible bet cannot exceed $1 per hand.
Horse Racing
The gambling age in Maine for horse racing is 18. Bets on track and pari-mutuel wagering on horse races are both allowed in the state for anyone reaching the right age.
